CHAWINGA SETS NEW NWSL RECORD

Kansas city Current fc and Malawi’s forward Temwa Chawinga has founded herself at the center of attention as she has managed to broke a National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) record by scoring 19 goals in a single season.

Chawinga achieved this feat on a Saturday night in United States (US) time when she scored a goal against Bay fc at Pay Pal Park stadium on 35th minute thereby surpassing Sam kerr’s previous record of scoring 18 goals which was set in 2019 season.

The lone goal helped her team to secure all 3 points and helping her team to secure a first ever home play off match.

On January 3, 2024, Chaŵinga signed a two-year contract with the Kansas City Current. She scored her first goal for the Current in a 4–2 win over Angel City FC on March 30, becoming the first Malawian goal scorer in NWSL history.

She scored four goals in her first five games, including a brace against Bay FC, and was named to the NWSL Team of the Month for March and April. She scored six goals in four games in June and was named the NWSL Player of the Month.

Chawinga’s currently at the top with 19 goals scored and she is preceded by her fellow African Barbra Banda of Orlando Pride who has managed to score 13 goals.
